Moving Tips
- Make a note of your shipment registration number (in the upper right hand corner of your Bill of Lading). Keep it with you in case you need to call your mover with questions. To track your move on line, (click here to track your move.)
- Designate one dresser drawer for sheets and towels so that you won't have to rummage through boxes for these essentials during the first night in your new home.
- If you need to store some of your goods, it's a good idea to tour the warehouse of the mover you're planning to use. Look for cleanliness, organization, security, etc.
- After you've thoroughly cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee, baking soda or charcoal in a sock or nylon stocking and place it inside to keep the interior smelling fresh. If you need to store it, be sure that it is as dry as possible to avoid mildew.
- Move your current phone book with you. You may need to call residents or businesses in your former hometown.
- Prepare an "Unload Me First" box with essentials that you'll need immediately at your new home. Include a baggy filled with hardware from disassembled items, such as dresser mirrors and beds.
- Before the van foreman leaves for your new residence, give him (and your move coordinator) a phone number where you can be reached. It's also a good idea to provide him with an alternate contact in case you are unavailable. Get the van foreman's cell phone number and pager number.
- At your destination, you might want to consider having the TV and VCR hooked up first to occupy the kids while the rest of the van is being unloaded.
- Keep your children and pets calm and away from all the activity on moving day by arranging for a friend to watch them at their house. Be sure to keep your pet's food and leash handy so they are readily available in your new home.
- When moving plants to your new residence by car, try not to let foliage rest against the windows, as the leaves will scorch.
- Have your utilities shut off the day after loading, as these services might be shut off the morning of the move if you've indicated the day of loading.
- Upon arrival at your new home, let your PC "acclimate" itself to room temperature before plugging it in.
- Schedule cleaning and other home services for the day after loading, as things will be hectic on moving day. This will keep the different service providers out of each other's way.
- Items that can't be moved with the mover include:
- Flammable items
- Combustible items
- Aerosol cans
- Hazardous materials
- Gasoline
- Plants
- Paints
- Ammunition and Explosives
- Jewelry
- Legal documents (wills, financial papers, insurance documents, etc.)
- Begin to inventory and evaluate your possessions. What can you sell or donate to a charitable organization? What haven't you used in the last year? Make final decisions as to what goes and what stays. Give away those items that you will not be moving. They can be a "going away" gift to somebody.
- Bring everything that you're moving to one location, if possible, including items that you've got at a friend's house or at the office.
- Make a list of everyone who needs to know about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
- Obtain a subscription to the local newspaper in your new town to familiarize yourself with local government, community, social news, and activities.
- Obtain copies of your personal records from schools, doctors, dentists, veterinarians, lawyers and accountants. Ask for referrals where possible. Collect other important papers (DMV records, stocks, wills, etc.)
- Obtain a change-of-address kit from the post office and begin filling out the cards. Or simply click here to do it on-line.
- Contact utility and related companies for service disconnect/connect at your old and new addresses. However, remember to keep phone and utilities connected at your current home until the day after moving. Here is a list to remind you:
- Gas
- Electric
- Water
- Telephone
- Cable TV
- Trash Collection
- Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner's or renter's, medical, and life) to arrange for coverage in your new home.
- If you're packing yourself, purchase packing boxes from Azalea or your local mover. Pack items that you won't need right away.
- Arrange to close your accounts in your local bank and open accounts in your new locale.
- Have your car checked and serviced for the trip. Also, make sure that your automobile is prepared (filled with the necessary antifreeze/coolant, for example) for the type of weather you'll be traveling in.
- Drain the gas and oil from power equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, cars, etc.) that you are moving.
- Organize and set aside those things you're taking with you so they don't get loaded on the van in error. Consider putting these items in the bathtub or in one closet.
